In an updated filling with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Yahoo revealed that a breach that occurred in 2013 impacted 3 billion accounts, essentially all accounts in existence at that time.

Security experts commented that Yahoo user accounts and personal information were protected with outdated, easy-to-crack encryption. All users affected by the breach have been notified.

Although no cleartext passwords, payment card or bank account information were exposed in the breach, the attackers were able to obtain names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, encrypted passwords and some security question and answer data

What You Can Do

  1. Update and change passwords of other online services, accounts if you have been using the same password as your Yahoo account. DynaRisk users can use our Password Strength Checker to ensure your passwords are difficult to crack even when breached via the Tools menu in My Dashboard.

  2. Add additional layer of protection to your Yahoo mail account by enabling 2 Step Authentication. You can find out how to enable 2 Step Authentication for Yahoo mail and other websites by using our 2 Step Authentication Checker via the Tools menu in My Dashboard.
    • Login into DynaRisk
    • Click Tools -> Two step authentication
    • Enter the name of the website you want to look for such as Yahoo Mail
  3. Be on the lookout for unsolicited telephone calls, SMS messages or emails to you or other family members who use Yahoo
